How We Got Here

Hotel Østerport as an emergency hotel in 1946

1946

Shortly after World War II, several emergency hotels for refugees were established in Copenhagen. One of those hotels was Hotel Østerport (opening on the 20th of December 1946), built right by the railway tracks next to the Østerport station. The hotel barracks replaced the former German bunker facilities, which then became part of the hotel’s basement.

DESIGNED BY HISTORY

Erik Christian Sørensen (1922-2011) was one of the great Danish architects of the 20th century. As a modernist architect and professor, he was influenced by Mies van der Rohe and worked with modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to emphasize a strict but elegant design.

As a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture, he influenced some of Denmark’s best post-war architects with international functionalism’s message of “the total, dynamic space,” where inside and outside flowed together; where the spaces could be easily changed, and where the minimal construction was exposed.
